Radiator Fan Symptoms, Function & Replacement Cost

Unfortunately, the radiator fan can fail and will cause your car to overheat. But what can cause this? The most common causes when a radiator fan is not coming on is broken fuse, bad wirings, bad coolant temperature sensorbad fan relay, or a faulty radiator fan.

Here is a more detailed list of the most common causes of a radiator fan not coming on. A fuse supports almost everything electrical in a car. If there is an electrical surge going towards a piece of electronic equipment, the fuse cuts the electric supply to that particular equipment saving it from destruction.

This is what we call a blown fuse. A blown fuse is no big deal, and changing one does not cost a lot of money. The fan itself often uses a big fuse of around 50A, while there might also be a separate small fuse to the fan control module.

Remember that if the fan fuse is blown — there might be a problem with the wirings or the radiator fan. There are often two different systems in different car models. Either your fan control is integrated into the engine control unit or you have a separate fan control module.

In both cases, the control units use a temperature sensor to know when to start the radiator fan. If this temperature sensor is broken, the control unit will not know when to start the radiator fan. Some cars use separate engine coolant temperature sensors for the radiator fan and the engine control unit. You need to check your repair manual of which temperature sensor controls the radiator fan and then resistance-measure the sensor with a multimeter to make sure it is functional.

If the fan is not working even when the car is overheating, there might be a wiring issue or a bad connection. Check the wirings going to the radiator fan from the control unit or relay.

Check in the connector plugs for any signs of corrosion. Also, check the connector plugs at the relay and control unit. Measuring the wirings with a multimeter is often not very effective, as you need to put a load on the wires to see if they are functional. However, as a fast test, you can check with a multimeter if there is coming power to the radiator fan. If your coolant level is low, there is a chance that you will get air in the system, and the coolant temperature sensor will not read the coolant temperature correctly.

If the coolant level is low, you need to refill the coolant to optimum levels. Failing to do so could risk your engine becoming overheated and seized. There is no coming back from a seized engine unless you are willing to spend a lot of money.

When your radiator fans are not coming on, it can also be caused by faulty radiator fans. The radiator fans have electrical motors inside of them, which will wear out after some years. Our mobile mechanics offer services 7 days a week. Upfront and transparent pricing.

Your vehicle's engine is constantly burning fuel and gets hot.

The cooling fan motor powers the cooling fan, which keeps the engine from overheating. The fan is located in the engine compartment, at the front or rear of the radiator. The fan cools the coolant as it passes through the radiator. The coolant flows through the entire engine and is responsible for absorbing the extra heat and thereby preventing the engine from overheating.

The fan blows the air from the outside and passes it through the radiator. If the cooling fan motor and the fan stop working, the coolant will remain hot and cause the engine to overheat.

Anytime that maintenance is performed on the cooling system, the fan motor should be inspected. One of the ongoing problems of automotive maintenance is managing engine temperature. Internal combustion engines put off a lot of heat: each individual explosion combines with the others to create an environment that is hardly friendly and safe. Excessive engine heat can be very dangerous for your car: it can damage engine components and eventually cause your vehicle to break down.

In order to keep your engine in good working condition, then, it is critical to keep tabs on your engine cooling system. This system is designed to manage heat in the engine compartment by removing heat energy from the engine components. This generally begins with the radiator, which is placed behind the grille of the car. The radiator is filled with tubes and hoses, all filled with a coolant fluid.

A pump circulates this fluid through the system, including a network of tubes that pass close to the engine. As the coolant fluid passes through the engine, heat from the engine warms the fluid. The coolant then travels back to the radiator, where heat dissipates into the air. The radiator fan plays a key role by encouraging air circulation around the radiator. A car's performance is a composite of myriad factors such as high quality parts. Auxiliary fan assemblies facilitate the movement of cooler air into the engine's coolant system, especially when the car is idle. An auxiliary fan assembly draws cool exterior air through the radiator to speed up the reduction of heat. The auxiliary fan assembly maximizes air circulation through the radiator so that the cooling system is properly cooled.

A vehicle's auxiliary fan assembly is turned by belts and can be created from either metal or plastic and is generally protected by a metal or plastic shroud. Your vehicle's auxiliary fan assembly can be located directly in front of your vehicle's radiator and directs cooler external air over the radiator fins. Your vehicle definitely requires the most high-end parts that are available. A vehicle's auxiliary fan assembly is belt driven and can be made of either metal or plastic and is commonly protected by a shroud.

The auxiliary fan assembly is found directly in front of the radiator and forces cooler outdoor air past the radiator fins. Your auxiliary fan assembly brings fresh outside air into the radiator to increase the cooling process. Your auxiliary fan assembly enhances air circulation through the radiator so that the engine coolant is effectively cooled.Pull over to a safe spot, pop the hood, and watch the fan to see if it engages over a five- to minute period with the engine warm and climbing close to the red.

Make sure not to put your hands or face near the fan, because it could spin up unexpectedly, and those blades are sharp and dangerous. Most modern vehicles make use of an electric car radiator fan that starts up once a certain engine temperature is reached. Sometimes, when the electric motor begins to wear out, has failed or has issues with bad wiring, the fuse that controls the fan relay will blow out.

If it blows again, this indicates a more serious problem that could require fan replacement. Photo courtesy of Flickr. Know How. Having been bitten by the car bug at a young age, I spent my formative years surrounded by Studebakers at car shows across Quebec and the northeastern United States.

Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube. The radiator fan has the important task of keeping the coolant cool when it gets hot. The coolant circulates between the radiator and the engine coolant chamber, so it heats up naturally as it absorbs the engine heat.

The radiator fan does not allow the coolant to heat up, as this can cause a number of problems. The cooling fan may wear out due to excessive use or simply due to age.

It cannot last forever, and it cannot continue to operate efficiently without your care. When it begins to fail, you will experience some symptoms that may indicate that it needs to be repaired or replaced. The radiator fan makes a noticeable noise during operation. This noise is produced by the motor of the cooling fan, which activates the fan for fast movement. Its whirring noise can even be heard inside the car before you start the engine. It is, therefore, best to have it checked by your mechanic.

If the radiator fan is no longer working, the coolant does not cool down.

The hot coolant continues to circulate between the engine and the radiator, and over time the engine starts to heat up. Rising temperatures can cause engine seizure, which means a lot of money.

To protect yourself from possible high expenditure, you should spend a small amount of money to re-ignite the radiator fan. The coolant can boil and evaporate if its temperature is not maintained. The radiator is responsible for maintaining the temperature of the coolant. However, if malfunctioning occurs, your coolant may dissolve into thin air like magic. If this is the case, your car could be facing a number of problems, and a failed radiator fan could be one of them.

A radiator fan must, therefore, be kept in tiptop condition to ensure that the coolant volume is maintained at all times. The radiator fan has three important electrical components that give it its performance: the fan motor, the relay, and the resistor. A problem with any of these three components can cause a problem with the fan, so it is best to test their integrity before making any repairs or replacements.

The fan is powered by electricity supplied by the car battery. However, the relay is the part that ensures that the fan receives the correct voltage and amps to operate efficiently. If the relay is defective, you can replace it with a small amount of money.

The relay transmits the electricity coming from the battery to the motor of the radiator fan. This engine works continuously while the car is running. Therefore, it can wear out easily. Without its proper function, the fan either does not work at all or works so slowly that the coolant cannot cool down properly. In either case, the engine will face the music and head towards a breakdown or a seizure.

Cooling Fan Motor

The fan motor is expensive, so you must first have it checked by a certified mechanic who can give you the right advice on your next step. If the motor needs repair, the mechanic will charge you a healthy amount for his time. The resistor allows the fan to operate with more than one speed setting. Different speed settings can help the motor to efficiently handle heat problems. However, if the resistor fails, various problems with motor performance may occur.
